Video Summary
The webinar opened with introductions from CASE Africa and Europe staff and a presentation by Professor Luciano Sazzo of Sapienza University on the use of generative AI in universities. He argued that universities must adapt to rapid digital change, especially after COVID-19 accelerated transformation. Sazzo emphasized that while information is now widely available, universities still play a vital role in guiding students, building knowledge, encouraging creativity, and developing soft skills, humanities, and ethical awareness.

He described generative AI as a powerful but still immature tool that can support learning, act as a “sparring partner,” and help students study more independently. However, he warned about risks such as information overload, cheating concerns, skill erosion, social isolation, and job disruption. He stressed the need for AI literacy, clear institutional guidelines, and critical thinking for both students and professors.

Sazzo also discussed assessment, favoring oral exams as a way to reduce cheating and strengthen reasoning skills. He drew historical parallels to writing and photography, showing that new technologies often change, rather than destroy, older practices. The session ended with audience questions and CASE’s Tom Booker highlighting upcoming CASE events, webinars, conferences, and networking opportunities.
