Video Summary
The session introduced new research from CASE and Campbell & Company on enrollment trends and institutional responses to enrollment challenges. Jenny Cook-Smith explained CASE Insights’ role in collecting benchmarking data and using global reporting standards to help institutions make informed, collaborative decisions. A poll showed that 89% of attendees are currently affected by enrollment challenges in some way.

Dr. Fleming Puckett presented the main research findings. The top causes of enrollment pressure were demographic shifts, declining trust in the value of education, academic offerings misaligned with market demand, insufficient scholarship support, and international enrollment restrictions. Institutions reported varying levels of preparedness, with many uncertain about how ready they are to respond. Common strategies included reviewing financials, moving programs online, using debt financing, closing or consolidating programs, and reconsidering campus footprint. The research also showed that marketing/communications and advancement are taking on more responsibility, and that stronger collaboration across the institution is essential.

During the panel, Edgar Gonzalez of Seattle University emphasized that advancement must earn its seat at the leadership table by adding strategic value. He described integrated advancement as essential because students and families expect a single, coherent institutional story. Carrie Dahlquist highlighted that advancement is increasingly expected to shape institutional strategy, not just raise funds. Both stressed the importance of aligning advancement, enrollment, and marketing efforts, especially around scholarship support, retention, alumni engagement, and clear messaging. The panel concluded that institutions need tight systems, honest internal conversations, and an enterprise-wide approach to navigate ongoing enrollment pressures.
