Video Summary
Lynn Wester’s webinar on strengthening donor relations through communications focused on making messages more personal, engaging, and donor-centered. She argued that donors want to know what their gifts achieved, feel genuinely appreciated and valued, and be asked appropriately. Retention depends on thanking donors and showing impact before asking again.

Because people face constant digital communication, effectiveness depends less on message frequency than on relevance and quality. Before sending a message, organizations should ask: Who cares about this? What should the recipient do or feel? What is the best channel? If a message only shares information, it may belong on the website rather than in an email.

Wester urged organizations to use clear, concise language, avoid jargon and institutional self-promotion, and position donors as the heroes of the impact. Communications should be written for one audience, have one purpose and one expected action, and appeal primarily to emotion. She recommended reading messages aloud and checking that they sound human, are easy to scan, and make the next step clear.

She also encouraged behavioral segmentation—such as first-time, loyal, recurring, or increasing donors—rather than relying only on gift amounts or broad demographics. Personalized communication can help people feel recognized and strengthen their connection to an organization.

The session introduced four communication purposes: gratitude, impact, persuasion, and information, with information generally better handled through other channels. Attendees were invited to submit communication samples for feedback and to watch a Pixar film before the next webinar, which will explore storytelling.
