Video Summary
The webinar, led by Lynn Wester and introduced by Nilanjana Pal, focused on strengthening donor relations through storytelling and communications. Lynn emphasized that effective storytelling helps show donors the impact of their gifts, persuade them to give or attend events, and build transparency and accountability. She explained that donors should be the heroes of the story, not the institution, and that ethical, strengths-based storytelling is essential, especially when featuring students, beneficiaries, or vulnerable groups.

Using Pixar’s storytelling framework, Lynn demonstrated how narratives should include a clear protagonist, obstacle, turning point, and resolution. She shared examples from nonprofit and education settings, showing how to center a single story, avoid overloading communications with too much data, and use before-and-after structures to demonstrate impact. She also stressed that data should support, not replace, the narrative.

Other key tips included using strong photography, pull quotes, and simple visuals; avoiding donor lists, overly formal cover letters, and too many statistics; and making asks clear, emotionally resonant, and singular. Lynn also discussed AI’s growing role in generating content and suggested asking more specific, AI-resistant questions when collecting student stories.

In the Q&A, she advised starting communications improvements with high-priority items like thank-you letters, using dynamic email content, and testing subject lines. She encouraged participants to build a culture of storytelling and to use ethical, donor-centered messaging throughout their communications.
