Video Summary
In the final webinar of CASE’s donor-experience series, donor-relations expert Lynn Wester discussed how to create compelling stories and reuse them across communications.

Wester encouraged organizations to move beyond rigid, deadline-driven calendars and focus instead on audience needs, engagement goals, and the best time and channel to reach donors. She recommended creating strong core stories, then adapting them for different audiences, formats, and moments—rather than treating each newsletter or report as a one-off. Repeated storytelling can deepen familiarity and engagement, especially when stories are revisited over time to show lasting impact.

Using Charity: Water’s story of Helen, Wester illustrated how one person’s experience with clean water could be told in stages: the immediate impact, changes in her community, and the legacy carried on by her grandchildren. She urged organizations to follow students, beneficiaries, and programs beyond the initial success, and to draw stories from program staff as well as fundraisers.

Wester also reviewed communications submitted by participants. Her recommendations included leading with people rather than institutional language, addressing donors personally, using specific and emotional stories instead of jargon and lists of facts, making calls to action clear, and tailoring content to relevant donor groups. She advised breaking lengthy annual reports into shorter, accessible stories and improving mobile readability.

Participants were encouraged to choose one practical change to make within 30 days, such as sharing one impact story at a time, revisiting a successful story, or putting the donor before the organization in communications.
