Video Summary
The session, led by James from VCU, focused on “practicing presence” in advancement work through improv-based exercises. Participants discussed how being fully present means listening to understand, noticing verbal and nonverbal cues, staying curious, and letting go of scripts. James emphasized that advancement work is often unscripted, so adaptability and active listening are essential for stronger relationships and better donor conversations.

Two breakout activities were used. In “Level Up Listening,” one person spoke about a real work challenge while the other listened without interrupting, then repeated back what they heard and added, “What I’m curious about is...” In the second activity, participants practiced “yes, and” responses to build on ideas rather than shutting them down. This highlighted how acknowledgment and curiosity can keep conversations moving forward and make others feel heard.

Participants reflected that silence can be difficult, but valuable, and that “yes, and” is more a mindset than exact wording. The main takeaways were: presence over perfection, active listening as a way to build trust, and using “yes, and” to encourage collaboration, discovery, and momentum in professional conversations. James closed by encouraging everyone to try one new tool in their next meeting or donor interaction.
