Pdf Summary
The presentation argues that universities need a clear, durable value proposition to stand out in a crowded recruitment market and align the institution internally. Brand campaigns can attract attention, but they are not strategy: campaigns communicate a story, while a value proposition defines the specific commitment behind it.

A strong value proposition should be credible, distinctive and durable, grounded in evidence and deliverable in practice. It should express student-facing commitments across the student journey and remain relevant beyond short campaign cycles. Marketing is well placed to lead this work because it sees the institution as a whole, is responsible for consistency, and is accountable for recruitment and reputation outcomes.

Sheffield Hallam’s example illustrates the approach. Its fragmented messaging and competitive pressures prompted the university to develop a shared commitment supporting its “Knowledge Applied” brand. Research included focus groups and interviews with 37 stakeholders, alongside desk research and student data. The resulting framework was taken through university leadership, translated into creative campaigns and embedded at course level through engagement with academics.

Its success depended not only on the framework, but also on stakeholder trust and flexibility: departments could identify different credible ways to deliver the same commitment. The proposition became a reference point for university planning, strengthened links between marketing, senior leaders and academics, and gave them a common language.

The key lesson is to build an evidenced institutional commitment—not just another campaign—and involve marketing in shaping it so the promise can be owned and delivered across the university.
