Speaker Peter McGee, Executive Director of Development for Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney, shared research from interviews, case studies, and institutional experience to explain why this model is challenging universities and other institutions.<br /><br />Venture philanthropy was described as philanthropic capital that borrows from venture investing and entrepreneurship: it is highly engaged, outcome-focused, often milestone-based, and may sometimes involve a return that is recycled into mission work rather than private profit. McGee contrasted it with traditional philanthropy, which is usually more passive, trust-based, and less structured.<br /><br />A central example involved a family funding lung cancer research while also seeking potential commercial benefit from a diagnostic innovation. This illustrated the ethical discomfort and practical ambiguity institutions face when generosity, influence, public benefit, and commercial interest overlap.<br /><br />McGee argued that institutions need to be ready through six capabilities: strategic alignment, institutional integration, cross-disciplinary literacy, governance and integrity, operational infrastructure, and ethical stewardship. She urged organizations to define venture philanthropy clearly, diagnose readiness, and build operating models that enable collaboration across advancement, finance, legal, research, and commercialization teams.<br /><br />The session concluded with Q&A on taxation, donor control, global contexts, and whether venture philanthropy should be treated separately from impact investing. CASE also noted it will continue exploring the field.
