About the Course
Build your DEIB capacity through this on-demand course focused on DEIB in Advancement. The Journey Starts with You: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in Advancement will take you through a personal journey focused on social identities, in groups and out groups, and approaching difficult conversations. You’ll come away from this course with a better understanding of yourself and others as it relates to DEIB.

This approximate run time of this course is approximately 2 hours of computer-based learning, and between 10-20 hours of offline activities to put the course into practice.
About the Instructor
Jessica Elmore, Ed. D (She/Her) is Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) training at Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Dr. Elmore is responsible for the development and tailoring of EDIB training for the global organisation, as well as providing EDIB consulting services for member institutions and organisations. As a visionary educational advancement leader, Dr. Elmore is dedicated to the development of authentic and cross-cultural opportunities and unites her scholarly research and practitioner advancement experience in building identity-centred solutions.

Formerly, Dr. Elmore was an active CASE North American District VI cabinet member and Co-chair of the CASE Opportunities and Inclusion committee. For over 10 years Dr. Elmore led the relationship building and retention programming for Kansas State University Alumni Association’s identity-centred domestic and international alumni.

Dr. Elmore has a doctoral degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in business administration from Kansas State University; her undergraduate degree was accomplished at a historically black university, Grambling State University. Dr. Elmore is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
About the Course Modules
Introduction
Language is not neutral, and in order to ensure a productive learning experience, we will start by defining key terms and expectations.

Module 1: Social Identities
Social identities are foundational to the work of Advancement because they are a key component of how individuals navigate the world. To continue connecting with and serving an increasingly diverse populations, it is critical that you first understand how your own and others' social identities shape values, beliefs, and participation.

In module one, you will learn how to:
  • Recognize how social identities shape your own and others' experiences in the workplace
  • Analyze your own social identities and how they shape your bias and actions

Module 2: Belonging
One of our greatest human needs is a need to belong, and this is reflected in the groups we become a part of. The ability to successfully navigate a variety of groups, which you may or may not be a part of, is critical to creating opportunities for DEIB in Advancement.

In module two, you will learn how to:
  • Recognize how in and out groups influence behaviors and feelings
  • Evaluate how you show up in in and out groups

Module 3: Difficult Conversations
To truly grow in your DEIB journey, you must be willing to be vulnerable and seek out multiple points of view. This personal journey will inevitably include uncomfortable moments and difficult conversations, but it is through this community building and perspective-taking that you will continue to grow.

In module three, you will learn how to:
  • Build out your DEIB support team
  • Recall and practice strategies for engaging in difficult conversations
