Video Summary
The webinar, led by Shara Freeman-Heffel, focused on “elevating stewardship” by making people feel truly seen, not just acknowledged. She opened with audience warm-ups and personal stories about moments when people felt cared for, using those examples to frame stewardship as proactive connection that requires no action from the constituent.

Shara defined stewardship as an act of connection and contrasted acknowledgment vs. being known, transactional vs. relational, and one-size-fits-all vs. one-size-fits-one. She emphasized that stewardship is cumulative: thoughtful actions build trust over time, while neglect can erode relationships. She also described stewardship as an ecosystem shaped by priorities, processes, policies, resources, staffing, and relationships—but protected by four internal elements no one can take away: intention, attention, motivation, and intuition.

A major theme was that stewardship is everyone’s job, not just the person with “stewardship” in their title. She shared examples from schools, hospitals, and fundraising settings to show how personalized notes, care packages, handwritten messages, and mission-connected gestures can deepen engagement. She also highlighted the importance of aligning stewardship with the institution’s mission and honoring what constituents actually care about.

Participants broke into groups to discuss what they already do well, what is missing, and how to improve stewardship for different audiences such as donors, scholarship supporters, alumni, volunteers, and corporate partners. The session closed with practical commitments: one thing to do this month, one in six months, and one ongoing habit to help people feel seen.
