Pdf Summary
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), the largest and only public HBCU in Arkansas since 1873, has transformed its fundraising approach to achieve unprecedented multimillion-dollar success. As a land-grant institution committed to addressing social and economic needs through research, teaching, and service, UAPB has prioritized comprehensive fundraising as a key driver for institutional growth. Recognizing that traditional HBCU fundraising models were insufficient, UAPB restructured its Institutional Advancement team and strategy to focus heavily on corporate and foundation giving, targeting these sources to comprise 65-70% of total donations.

Key changes included hiring dedicated, high-level staff for major gifts and corporate relations, reducing reliance on alumni and event fundraising, and emphasizing an 8-touch personalized approach to donor engagement. Gift officers are expected to cultivate and close high-value corporate and foundation gifts, with clear metrics on prospect outreach and surety ratings of 85% or higher. The team also leverages ongoing communication—including calls, texts, and personalized notes—to nurture relationships consistently.

This strategic focus has yielded over $47 million in gifts and contributions since 2018, including nearly $28 million from corporate and foundation partners, supporting scholarships, student retention, professional development, athletics, and facility expansion—such as acquiring the historic DuBocage House for a new Hospitality Management Center. Significant partners include the Walton Family Foundation and Windgate Foundation, contributing multimillion-dollar gifts for student leadership and infrastructure.

UAPB’s roadmap highlights the need to redefine the fundraising message, focus on sustainable revenue sources, compensate staff competitively, and maintain authentic donor relations while fostering institutional innovation and diversity. Their success demonstrates that embracing a comprehensive, relationship-centered, and targeted fundraising model can substantially grow resources, support student success, and contribute to expanding Arkansas’s middle class.
